The District is waking back up! There are a ton of new exhibits kicking off this weekend, so check out some of these fun, fresh art events and recptions:
The Washington Examiner's 17th Annual Arts on Foot kicks off today. Centered at 7th and F Streets, NW, the event spans four blocks in the Penn Quarter and features an art market, hands-on arts and crafts activities, restaurant sampling court, wine sampling, entertainment stages with local music and performances, and a neighborhood showcase of the Penn Quarter. The art market runs Thursday through Saturday, and features nearly 100 artists (and from their website it looks like a very cool and interesting array of media/types of artwork). The main festival and associated activities takes place on Saturday, September 12th, 11 a.m.-5 p.m.
- Right here in the Ripley Center the exhibit Accelerate: A National Juried Exhibition for Emerging Artists with Disabilities opens today and runs until January 6th, 2010. The show features, "works by 15 award-winning emerging artists with disabilities, ages 16 to 25. Their work reflects their experiences as emerging artists and reveals how their disability has motivated, shaped, and transformed their lives."
- The Arlington Arts Center's Fall Solos 2009 exhibition opens Friday, September 11th, with a reception from 6-9 p.m., and runs until November 7th. The exhibit "represents the finest cutting-edge contemporary art" and features sculptures, drawings, and other mixed media from David Page, Cynthia Hron, Jenn Figg, Christian Benefiel, Roxana Perez-Mendez, and Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum.
The Civilian Art Project opens two new exhibits this Friday. Cara Ober: Love Letters (Example from Love you from Afar series at left) features works with layered drawing, printing, and painting techniques that explore "the relationship of the artist to image, word, and personal meaning found in the exploration of secret fantasy and expressive interlude." Nikki Painter: Debriscapes features neon-colored drawings and site-specific installations that explore "the relationship and continuum between the built and natural worlds"(See an example at right: 19 (Meet)). The reception for both is 7-9 p.m. on Friday and exhibits run through October 17th.
The Curator's Office kicks off it's newest exhibit Slow Food by Patrick Wilson with a reception on Saturday, 6-8 p.m. The show runs until October 17th and features five abstract paintings (See one example at left) by Wilson that "encourage the viewer to recommit to the pleasure of carefully looking at and savoring the elements of an abstract work of art, allowing for deep aesthetic nourishment."
- Irvine Contemporary has a reception on Saturday at 6-8 p.m. for its new exhibit New Realisms, which is on display until October 24th and features paintings from Bruno Perillo, Edward del Rosario, Adam Stennet, Barnaby Whitfield, and Eric White. The works explore "a new dialog about the role of painting in a post-photography, post-digital, and 'post-everything' visual culture. (Jackie Jump-Ups by Bruno Perillo at right).
